Fashion Spread

Some people have been lucky capable of doing fashion spread sponsored by a magazine. But questions arise as photographers are getting too comfortable doing it and quality begin to decrease. What does a good fashion photo spread consist of? Does it need to consist more of the artist's feeling? But then, how good can the artist pass his/her feeling to the audiences? Is photo spread more of an exhibition of an artist's talents or the magazine's style, or both?... What I usually think is that fashion spreads in a magazine have limits, they cannot go beyond or be different than the concept of the magazine. But can artists have limits? They should not. But may be if the limit is just in terms of concept, it is acceptable, but not in terms of what can the artists do. Some magazines that do not have strong concept usually confuse the readers. Its fashion spreads are usually not consistent with the concept or theme of the magazine. Sometimes the reason why they do not work is because the artist cannot deliver what he or she had planned and come up with different concepts. I know that some things are relatives but I am sure that there are somekind of good guidelines on doing awesome fashion spreads. Inputs in this topic will be appreciated.

Well what do you think? There aren't many true talents here in Indonesia, people here tend to look to the west or simply get inspiration from other foreign magazines and thus copying them. Our young artists/talents are simply not mature enough in their taste and perception. We have to search, truly understand and respect and deepen our own culture and heritage whilst looking at others to give us better perpective and sense of belonging.

continue

only then they can understand their jobs , understanding what their jobs is all about, go within and follow the actual theme of the spread, in line with the style and concept of the magazine. BEing creative sometimes also need a little restraint in order to blossom.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you. I do believe that with proper eye opening experience, Indonesian artists/photographers can be real talents. We have tried Indonesian photographers who live abroad and even the ones who live in Indonesia. We found some excellent ones. Tho, it is true, the true talents are rare here. Part of the blame may be directed towards Indonesia ways of living which so in-a-box type. Even the good ones who live here too long may easily loose their eyes due to the chaotic and uninspirational live. But lets not loose hope... and lets try to change the trend
